hope

Anne Barbour

John 1:4-5  (The Message)

Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.

Reflection

Interesting that God chose to reveal Himself to us first as Creator. It’s the first thing we learn about who He is. He was in charge of inspiring the writers of His Word. Apparently it suited Him to start the eternal conversation between Himself and humankind, “Hello. I’m Creator God.”

One major focus of Advent is hope. What is it about His ability to create that might cause me, His child, to cling to HOPE? God, starting with absolutely nothing, conceived and created all that is. The whole of this act originated from within Himself. He can bring something dead back to life. He can heal regardless of the degree of sickness. He has no limitations whatsoever, therefore there is nothing He cannot do. A hundred lifetimes would not afford me time enough to ponder the greatness of Creator God.

God can make something out of nothing. Seem ridiculously obvious? Not to me, at least not at this moment in my life. There are many, many circumstances I am aware of today; terrible, irreconcilable circumstances. They cannot be healed, restored, righted…not by human hands. So I find great comfort and HOPE, that God, passionate about His creation, once said, “Let there be light.” And there was light.

Prayer

Jesus, You came into this world bringing life and light. You are the Light of the World and I bow before You. Because of who You are, I am a person of hope. Because of what you can do, will do, and have already done, I HOPE. There is NOTHING… no looming or “impossible” circumstance that can put a dent in that hope. I cling to the truth of the passage above, believing from the core of my being, NO darkness can put out Your light.
